HMWIUSA Board of Directors Formally Vote and Approve Pursuing Legislations for Hospitality Employees

The Board of Directors of Hospitality Mental Wellness Initiative USA (HMWIUSA) has formally approved the pursuit of federal legislation dedicated to advancing mental health protections for hospitality workers nationwide. The proposed bill, titled the "Hospitality Worker Mental Health and Wellness Act," represents a historic step toward addressing the unique pressures faced by chefs, restaurant staff, hotel employees, and other hospitality professionals. By moving forward with this legislative initiative, the Board has signaled its commitment to creating sustainable, systemic change that supports the well-being of an industry long known for its demanding environment.
HMWIUSA outlined five key pillars within the proposed legislation. First, the Act would establish industry-specific mental health and suicide prevention standards tailored to the hospitality workforce. Second, it would ensure confidential access to counseling, crisis support, and peer programming in formal partnership with HMWIUSA. Third, the legislation would require employer-based training, education, and certification programs for individuals in key leadership roles, fostering workplaces that recognize and respond to mental health challenges. Fourth, it would introduce tax credits and grants to strengthen nonprofit-employer collaborations that expand access to care. Finally, the Act would include strong non-retaliation protections to safeguard workers who seek mental health services, ensuring they can pursue care without fear of professional consequences.
Executive Director Vincent Tropepe will lead advocacy efforts in Washington, DC, including seeking meetings with the leadership of the Congressional Mental Health Caucus. These discussions will focus on building bipartisan support and advancing a policy framework that reflects the realities of the hospitality industry. Through strategic engagement at the federal level, HMWIUSA aims to position the Hospitality Worker Mental Health and Wellness Act as a model for sector-specific mental health reform—ensuring that those who dedicate their careers to serving others receive the care, dignity, and protections they deserve.
